Would you consider leaving UK for HK?

I'm serious!

Foo: I have been condidering that but must wait for opportunity to pop up, not to mention the current economic situation. And yes, I do like that place, it has freedom and good Chinese food. Why do you ask?

Tat: no la, still in the ang-moh land.

Alice:

I am considering the same. HK is closer to family, has good food and entertainment and is coming close to the UK on the political, social and economic standards. Maybe offers more career prospects to people like us. But it's also over-crowded and fast-paced... quite a change from what we are enjoying in the UK. Not so much of a problem to us (we have passed tougher tests in Malaysia), but to the young ones (schooling/childhood in HK can be a nightmare...)

Hard choices, really.

Foo: Yes, you have to give and take. Going HK means no more peaceful and quiet life in the UK. However, HK educational system is one of the best in the world—where else can you find a place where the kids study Chinese history yet with good command in English? Furthermore, you as an academician would find it easier to get a job in HK universities, and they pay well, while me in commercial field would find it tougher to get a job at this point of time.
Actually the worst thing about HK is not the pace, is the shortage of individual space. If you ask me what is the best place on earth for kids to grow up, I would say Australia, and I love that place, but finding a job there now is tough, and the pace is even slower than the UK. haha .

‘HK educational system is one of the best in the world’— true but also one of the toughest, if not THE toughest. When I was in Form 6, people said STPM was the world's second hardest exam -- only behind HK public exam. STPM is a nightmare to me so why should I give my child a bigger nightmare?

Foo: Don’t worry so much la…...the kids would know how to deal with it, we find STPM tough because it was in Bahasa, and secondly the expectation to score high depressed us—as we were in an unfair competition. A level in other countries are different, you don’t have to score all As
